The University of South Alabama has produced many talented and successful alumni over the years, and Jodie Cain Smith is no exception.

Smith attended the University of South Alabama where she earned a BFA degree in Theatre Arts. Since then, Smith has performed in many theaters and has furthered her education by earning an MAE in School Counseling.

Smith is also a blogger, an actor and instructor at Trustus Theater and a published columnist. She has been featured in Chicken Soup for the Military’s Spouse’s Soul, Fort Hood Sentinel, The Petigru Review and The Savannah Morning News.

Now, Smith can call herself an author. She has written her first book titled The Woods at Barlow Bend published by Deer Hawk Publications.  The book is scheduled to hit the shelves on Nov. 19th.

A native of the Mobile Bay area, Smith is no stranger to Alabama and the rich history that it holds.  According to her biography, a main source of inspiration came from a story of her family that took place in Alabama.

According to her biography, when she was a teen, Smith’s grandmother told her a story of “an adolescence spent in 1930’s rural Alabama, the rumors surrounding her parents, and the murder trial that would alter her life.” The Woods at Barlow Bend is the adaptation of this story.

In a press release Aurelia Sands Wilson, the owner and publisher at Deer Hawk Publications said, “I’m very excited about this book launch. Jodie is an extremely talented woman, and the story hooks the reader. It doesn’t let go until the end. I couldn’t believe it actually happened.”

The Woods at Barlow Bend is described in a press release as “A true story about death, loss, and redemption during one of the most tumultuous time in U.S. History, this book follows Hattie from the time she learns of her mother’s horrible death and the murder trial of her father, through her adulthood. Hattie learns of a strength she never knew she had, and that loving someone means forgiving them as well.”

Smith will host a book release party on Nov. 15th from 2-4 p.m. This event will take place at the Cathedral Square Gallery on 612 Dauphin St. Smith will be signing copies of her book and refreshments will be provided.
