Love and Despair in the Deep South

By Isa

This is a beautiful, deeply moving novel, the author successfully carries us along the ebb and flows of tormented Southern lives. The wonderful depiction of the Deep South creates a very unique atmosphere where passions thrive, people lie, tell the truth, dream, regret and despair. I particularly enjoyed Sylvia’s character, her attitude, mannerisms and personality reflect so well her Old South upbringing and yet she is a modern woman. Your heart will bleed for sweet Andrew, a deeply troubled teenager with a rare psychological condition. I could not put this book down, I read it cover to cover in a day. The characters have so much depth that they come to life. I was charmed, this is definitely a great read.

Like long-distance runners on an unfamiliar uphill course

By Tony Paul K

The Tides of Mississippi is an extremely powerful novel of the personal struggles of a father and son from Chicago who must first learn to understand themselves and their relationship while being “strangers in a strange land.” Like long-distance runners on an unfamiliar uphill course, they discover with the kind help of Mississippians a way to cope with past tragedies and heartbreak. This is a good novel and a great read! Philip Levin should write a “Part Two” so we can follow his vivid characters as they continue on in life with their self-discoveries.

Seasoned writer hits the mark again

By Steven H. Douglass

This book is excellent! The story was so well done, I hope the author will take the steps to turn it into a movie.

By Lisa Pinkowski

The Tides of Mississippi follows Rick Lewis, a grieving father trying to rescue his son and build a new life after a tragedy that has ripped his family apart. It’s also a story of healing and how each person copes with grief in his/her own way. And lastly, it is a hopeful story of second chances … of swimming against the tide and coming out the other side. Definitely some of Dr. Levin’s most engaging writing … so far.

Characters with twisted and eccentric ways

By Darden North

In “The Tides of Mississippi” Philip Levin captures the true feeling of family and how the actions of others cannot always prevent tragedy. Only a writer who has roots in the South can truly capture the essence of what its people really think and begin to analyze their sometimes twisted and eccentric ways. Levin’s talent for bringing a unique story to the page in this masterful novel has never been better.

Philip’s best

By lottie boggan

I have read a number of pieces by this author, and in my opinion, this is by far the best novel he has written. It gives a real flavor of Mississippi. Nice progression as a writer, Philip. I highly recommend The Tides of Mississippi.
