B&N SMALL PRESS DEPARTMENT
The most important part to getting it on their shelves:
If you would like your title to be considered for store placement, please submit a finished copy (no manuscripts please) of the book along with marketing and promotion plans, trade reviews, and a note describing how the book meets the competition (what makes it unique) to:
The Small Press Department
Barnes & Noble, Inc
122 Fifth Ave
New York, NY 10011
212-633-3388 general information
212-463-5677 fax
The information must include the ISBN and the suggested retail price. The review process takes about 6 weeks, the Small Press Department responds to all submissions in writing. Part of the process includes having your title entered in Bowker Books in Print. Use www.bowkerlink.com to submit information.
I’ve attached the letter B&N has directed the local store’s CBDMs to give authors who inquire about signings. It has a lot of helpful information about the criteria for event consideration as well as the details about having stock carried at the store level (see section below “Timing” ). Here at the store, we aren’t allowed to speculatively order stock for the shelves as the decision about what is carried at each location is handled at the corporate level.
We can certainly order the book for any and all interested customers so certainly direct your supporters to stop in or call our location ( 314-862-6280 ) and we will happily assist them with their orders. I’d encourage you to reach out to the small press department using the link in the attached letter and inquire if they feel your title should be coded as a stock (in store placement) title.
Sincerely,
Meaghan Harned

Want more information about store events? Support bookstores in your community:
Like our Facebook page “Barnes & Noble – Ladue” and follow us on Twitter and Instagram @bnladue
Thank you for your inquiry about setting up events at Barnes & Noble bookstores.
BASIC CRITERIA: A book is eligible for an event provided it is orderable through Barnes & Noble at a trade discount and is returnable. This means an event will be considered but is NOT guaranteed. The decision to book the event is at the sole discretion of individual store management. The Community Business Development Manager (CBDM) at a Barnes & Noble store can look it up on their store’s computer to see if it fits this basic criteria.
YOU MAY PITCH YOUR EVENT DIRECTLY TO STORES—To find contact info for the stores, please visit either http://www.barnesandnobleinc.com or www.bn.com and click on “Stores & Events” in the upper right hand corner of the home screen which will bring up the Store Locator feature, searchable by city, state, or zip code. It will provide you with the store’s telephone number. When you call the store, ask for the Community Business Development Manager (CBDM).
WHAT THE CBDM AND THE STORE MANAGER CONSIDER:
–The CBDMs will use their knowledge about their local communities and who shops in their stores, and consider their store’s own experience with previous author events to make their best determination of what kinds of events are most likely to work in their store.
–The store managers will consider staffing and other resources available at any given time, and other logistical considerations to determine if they can host an event.
–To maximize the impact and success of the event, B&N will generally host only one event per market and ask for exclusivity in the immediate trade area. Our CBDMs will ask you about appearances you may have scheduled with our competitors and will likely decline the event if they feel the market is over-saturated with other appearances.
WHAT WILL HELP YOUR PITCH:
–Let the CBDM know if the author or publisher has a coordinated marketing and publicity plan, particularly local radio or television appearances, or newspaper coverage scheduled for the particular market in conjunction with the proposed event date.
–Let the CBDM know of any other promotional platforms such as a direct connection to fans and followers in the proposed market via Facebook, Twitter or other social media or a highly trafficked personal website.
–Let the CBDM know if there is a reliable list of the author’s personal contacts, e.g. family, friends, colleagues, fans and professional contacts in the particular market who you feel reasonably confident will attend if notified.
–Let the CBDM know if there is an event history in the proposed market, such as previous appearances in local bookstores, libraries or auditoriums that are indicative of author’s drawing power.
TIMING:
Typically, each Barnes & Noble bookstore works 6-8 weeks in advance of the event month in question to schedule appearances. Some major metropolitan areas such as New York or Los Angeles can work as far as four months in advance. Events are best scheduled at or close to the on-sale date of your book to maximize the sales potential and event attendance at the event.
Please note that while a store can decide whether or not to bring in a book for the sole purpose of an event, they do NOT decide what books get stocked and replenished on their shelves. Information on how to submit your title for store placement consideration can be found in the accompanying
document entitled “Acceptance Criteria” or by visiting
www.barnesandnobleinc.com and clicking on either “For Authors” or “For Publishers” as appropriate.
Thank you for thinking of Barnes & Noble and hope you find this information helpful.
