5.0 out of 5 starsTrue Nature of God is Love

By SpJoRuss

I believe that this book shows the true nature of God. That God is not a tyrant looking at you through a magnifying glass. His love is genuine and surpasses human love. Not a God that is setting rules for us to live by but a God that you can have a very real relationship with, talk to and hear from. God is not schizophrenic –love you one minute then burn you in hell the next. Some people, I know, are not sure of this. The book can help you see him in a different light but you will have to interact with him on your own to know it for sure.

5.0 out of 5 starsI admire what has come from this author’s heart!

By Danni O.

What stands out first in reading this first book of his, is the huge amount of effort and research that James Washburn put into it. I have lived 3 years in the high North and this book has brought back so many memories. Not only of wonderful people but of the whole Spiritual Nature of the people and land. I truly hope that Mr. Washburn has plans for a future book and if so, I look forward to reading it. My hat is off to Mr. Washburn in what has obviously come from his Heart in this intense effort!

5.0 out of 5 starsFood for weary souls

By Pamalia

James C. Washburn’s tale Touching Spirit, The Letters of Minnominike, will completely transport you right into the heart of his character’s lives. Culturally different from anything I’ve ever read, I was captivated by the bond of love the Grandfather had for his adopted grandson. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have intimately known and shared the deep, personal thoughts and searchings of your Grandparents or loved ones that have passed home before you, wonder no longer. This book will be an absolute treasure. Woven throughout the Grandfather’s letters are his own heart callings of finding intimacy with his creator. From this precious, magnificient, spiritual relationship flows the life lessons he longs to pass on to his grandson. The Letters become his means and are a cherished gift, their timing impeccable. The circle of LIFE is clearly seen in spite of the generational difference between the two of them. Intimate knowledge and simple truths form an undying legacy that awakens and feeds a very weary soul. Anxiously awaiting the movie. 5 Stars!

5.0 out of 5 starsThe audio book is a jewel of a listen and juxtaposition of voices stunningly beautiful..

By Maureen

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominke has recently been released as an audio book. It is a jewel of a listen. The juxtaposition of the voices of the young man, Tulagaq Kagagi (Raven/Raven) narrated by Robert D. Foster and the grandfather, Minominke ( Rice Moon Bear) narrated by author James C. Washburn is stunningly beautiful. The use of a Native American flute between chapters is haunting and provides listeners with anticipation of the next step of the journey. The beauty of the story unfolds through the guided imagery of the young man’s journey in parallel with the letters of his grandfather being read to him.Imagine walking into the boreal forest of Canada as the words of Minominke surround you and he shares his message of deep love for his great grandson. Minominke is the voice and the teacher. He guides his student to search in his heart and soul to find his own truth. Minominke’s ultimate message is that like Tulagaq Kagagi’s name sake, the raven, he will never be alone. Eternal Spirit will always be with him in this life and next. Minominke’s message is a universal message that we as readers/listeners can take to heart as we are also taught the importance of finding our own truth. This is a deeply moving story and a must read/listen.

5.0 out of 5 starsExtraordinary…

By Kindle Customer

This book is wonderfully thought out and then perfectly written. There is so much in this that rings of truth that I found myself completely absorbed in it and at times smiling and at others tearing up — unashamedly. Some letters paralleled with things that I have thought a lot about and I appreciated having the idea put a little differently and in a way that I really connected with in a heartfelt manner. I will probably read this again. I very much recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 starsLike A Modern Day Hymnal

By Glenn Klein

There are many wonderful literary qualities that comprise “Touching Spirit: Letters of Minominike”. At the top of the list are the beautiful prose that is woven by its author James C. Washburn AND the thematic focus of the work. Every human being yearns and is drawn toward the oneness that resides in each. The peace of mind that Washburn’s story creates in the reader is like a modern-day hymnal for the soul. Spiritual, peaceful, tranquil, interesting, thoroughly well-written…I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 starsIt Just Makes Sense

By Joseph

I must admit, I was a little hesitant to pick this book up when I saw it under the genre of religion/spirituality. I’ve grown tired of Christians trying to force their religion on me, so it was with reluctance that I read the first several pages. I did not dither in devouring the remainder of the novel. The letters rang true, calling us to reconnect with ourselves and the natural world.

“Many read only His Book of Truth that is printed and know nothing of the Book of Truth written in His creation long before man even put marks on paper.”

“When we think that Creator does not see each human equally, then we, too, believe we should not see each equally with some love. It is funny, yet sad, how each person that believes this way things that Creator see just their group as on His side and that only they are children of His.”

These are only two examples of teachings, of understanding. It just makes sense. If all people could open their hearts to Minominike’s teachings, perhaps we could find a harmony with each other and the sacred gift of the earth

5.0 out of 5 starsA beautiful story with a timeless message of and acceptance.

By Brianna

I really enjoyed this book; it is a message of love and acceptance told through a lens of multiple cultures and generations. Each page leaves you pondering. One of my favorite excerpts: “The heart can be trusted. It is the seat of wisdom, the residence of the Spirit of Truth, the Teacher Within. It is the catalyst and source that gently nudges the mind to reexamine what is in conflict with love, unity and peace.” p. 316

5.0 out of 5 starsA Special Book for the Ages

By Terry Bay and Steve Bay

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike is really awesome and very touching! It says that all mankind is under the benevolent care of God. It is written to a child but in essence, it is written to all of us. I have purchased this book several times for friends and family. It is one of those books you keep in your library and read over and over, I love it! It is a present to us all.

5.0 out of 5 starsThe author is terrific at getting this across to his reader’s

By Carolyn

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike is superb. To sum it up… all mankind is under the benevolent care of God. It is absolutely ludicrous when in light of the complete sufficient grace of God and to say that man’s imperfect see-saw belief is capable of securing grace and peace. The author is terrific at getting this across to his reader’s. The religious systems of self-improvement and soul management try to keep God in a box….this book opens the veil to freedom of soul and spirit. Highly recommend.

By PATRICIA SALONEN

A lovely book – my imagination could hear Chief Dan George speaking the words of the letters to my heart. The author has captured Job 12:7, 8 – But ask the animals and they will teach you – or the birds in the sky and they will tell you – or speak to the earth and it will teach you – or let the fish in the sea inform you. Migwech, Pep.

By Daniel Vergin

I have had the privilege of knowing James “Pep” Washburn since 1970 and have followed his career and adventures throughout North America for many years. When I learned that Pep was writing a book based on his intimate experiences with the Inuit tribes I knew that I was in for a treat. His ability to paint a word picture that includes actual translations made the book even more exciting and real. When you read this book you discover that the author has a real relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ. Pep has opened his heart and insight to all who would read this wonderful tale sharing his wisdom and discernment that can only come through a radical love for the Creator and his creation. I dare anyone to read this book and not be challenged and changed.

5.0 out of 5 starsAllow Touching Spirit to touch your spirit!

By moon

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike provides a beautiful unfolding of universal truth and wisdom as shared through decades old letters written by an indigenous grandfather to his orphaned, non-native grandson. Years of study in a dominant culture seminary have left the grandson yearning for more. The long ago letters he uncovers in the tiny cabin he was raised in open to him a universe of unconditional love and enduring spiritual connectedness to all that was, is, and will be. The laws of spirit that are written about in Touching Spirit awakens and strengthens that which we already have planted deeply inside of us…truth, balance, respect, love, courage, integrity, knowledge, wisdom, humility. I highly recommend this book to any who are open to finding a sense of peace and reassurance in their hearts and minds.

5.0 out of 5 starsCreation’s Handiwork…

By Jean Abreu

We are Creation’s handiwork. Born of the natural world and fashioned from elements brought into being by exploding stars, our story is deeply enmeshed within the ancient story of all things. Yet it seems we have forgotten…

Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike reminds us of an ancient wisdom that’s very much alive and nestled within. The beauty of this book is that you’ll rediscover and recognize what you already know to be true; we are part of something wondrous and much larger than ourselves. This book will help you to remember…

5.0 out of 5 starsI quite enjoyed this book

By Victor C. van den Broek d’Obrenan

I quite enjoyed this book. A deep expression of the unity of all humanity in this journey we call life. This is the story of an orphaned caucasian boy who was adopted by a native couple in Northern Manitoba, Canada. The grandfather of the couple is a wise native person and deeply loves the young boy. Now, near the end of his life he begins to write a series of letters to the young boy which he hopes the boy, when he grows up, will read. Drawing upon all of the wisdom he has collected on his life journey the grandfather shares from his heart things to do with his life in nature and his love of the Spirit and the Spirit’s love for all people. The grandfather was educated in seminary until he could not “endure the torment between heart and mind” and returned back to his life of trapping and fishing. Filled with vignettes of life in the wild, the laughter and the sorrow recorded by this wise old sage. The story unfolds as we see that the boy has returned after three decades to discover the cedar chest with the letters which he now reads. A sensitive touching story that connects the reader to the “Teacher within” for “each person to learn in their own time when they are open” to the things touching Spirit.

I have read many books over the years but this is the first one I can say I could not put down and read half of it in the first sitting. I had it finished in two more sittings. An excellent read, well presented and surely keeps your attention. After my wife is finished reading it I intend to read it again and this time do it more slowly as this book is truly full of excellent material. One of the best books I have read. Highly recommended to anyone. Excellent material.

5.0 out of 5 starsMessage is “Love”

By Pastor B

After reading the first five persons reviews which are so wonderfully written, I cannot add any depth to what they have said other than in reading the letter I feel and see the same things he tells of the spirit. Long ago I left organized religion and man’s teaching and allowed the Spirit to teach me and have had the message of love loosened in my heart. I love the way he attributes the teachings to the animal kingdom. I believe all should read this book and that it will open a depth of understanding you may not have considered before. As you may have noticed Formerly I was a Pastor/Teacher in an organized church but my heart would not let me stay in that place. I also have learned from older writings like Tozer, Murray and others. Some men were born out of season while the world was not ready for their message so it was held in print to be released in due season which in my opinion is now!

5.0 out of 5 starsTHE VOICE OF THE SPIRIT

By Ivan A. Rogers

I have read this incredible book and highly recommend it to all recipients of things spiritual. Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike takes us into the soul of an aboriginal inhabitant of the cold and wild Upper North American continent. Have you ever wondered how the Almighty communicated Himself Spirit to spirit with those who were virtually isolated from the accoutrements of the Christian faith? In reading this book you’ll discover that the Spirit can be heard and understood even through the voice of His entire magnificent creation.

5.0 out of 5 starsOutstanding

By Robert May

A beautiful tale. The story of a loving Great Grandfather leaving letters to a young boy who would still be too young to understand or remember the old man’s wisdom when the old man’s time came to leave this earthly life. It shows us in no uncertain terms that we live in an allegorical world. This world which is the living book, the message, the loving letters to us from the Father of us all, if we would only learn to read this book of Truth that we are surrounded by and living within.
This world is not an illusion,as some would have us believe. It is a loving message. A living book. Written in allegory.
But this is something for each person to learn.

Format: Paperback

Touching Spirit: Letters of Minominike by James Washburn is the best spiritual book I have read since Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch and The Shack by William Young. Absolutely inspiring and empowering. The old saying, “You can never go back” is so wrong. Sometimes you must reconnect with the past in order to complete the future. I highly recommend this for anyone—any culture, any religion, any walk of life. It brings you back to what is most important. Love.

Above all it demonstrates that people of all cultures long to know and experience the great and good “Spirit.” I was amazed at the Self-revelation of the Creator in everyday encounters with Nature. Listen to this aging Native American instruct his adopted grandson; “A circle, like the Creator, is the shape of perfection, completeness, harmony, oneness. He is all in all—the light of the world is the love of the Creator, which is perfect, complete and is one. It is not broken in pieces to be given a little here, a little there, or none over there…” Gripping from first page to last, I’m proud to give this enlightening work my highest “5-Star” rating! Author James Washburn has struck gold.”

Best spiritual book since Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch and The Shack by William Young

Love.

This unique read reminded me of the writings of Sigurd Olson, Anne Dillard, even John Muir. Definitely touches your spirit and lets you know the natural world can heal our urbanized souls. I would highly recommend Touching Spirit: Letters of Minominike.

After reading the first five persons reviews which are so wonderfully written, I cannot add any depth to what they have said other than in reading the letter I feel and see the same things he tells of the spirit . Long ago I left organized religion and mans teaching and allowed the Spirit to teach me and have had the message of love loosened in my heart.

I haven’t cried while reading a book since “Where the Red Fern Grows” when I was 12…Until now! Thank you, Pep, for sharing your gift of prose through this poignant love story. No matter where you
may be on your spiritual journey, these letters will speak to your soul. They touched my heart on so many levels. Reading this book has rekindled a profound spiritual joy in me that I thought I’d lost.

Wonderful thoughts stayed with me after putting down the book. It’s a must read for anyone that loves to feel the calm of life. Every page caught me by surprise with its ever changing story line of life. It is one of those books that when it’s time to go to bed I caught myself reading one more page, then one page, until I finished it to the end.

I just finished reading Touching Spirit: The Letters of Minominike! I am simultaneously settled and stirred…settled in the oneness of Creator and Creation, and stirred to a deeper awareness of “the Teacher within.” This book deserves to be read more than once, and I intend to do just that!
