I purchased this book on Amazon when it was 99 cents and I feel I got the best bang for a buck in a long, long time. Johnnie has struggle with bulimia since her early teen years and as an adult, although sometimes fragile, finally conquers it with the help of her kind, compassionate husband. As with all eating disorders, it still comes back to haunt her during stressful times. Her formative years were spent with her grandparents, a mother who was absent from her life for lengthy periods of time, and a father, marked unknown on her birth certificate. This book really touched a tender place in my heart and I found it so compelling, I literally stayed up most of the night just so I could finish it.

I think the reason it resonated so with me is that my niece would have been 41 this month, the same age as my youngest daughter. She struggled with anorexia for two years before she passed away just days before her high school graduation. Her heart simply gave out. She was the valedictorian of her class, and her mother, through her grief, asked if she could read her daughters speech she had prepared.
Johnnie Come Lately will give hope to others struggling through eating disorders. I love how the author developed her character. I feel as if they’re real and I want to read more about them!
