A Momentary Lifting of Fog
Walking on a fog filled morning, I stooped low to keep from disturbing branches laden heavy with drizzle. Not low enough. A cold shower found its way down the back of my neck, each drop laughing as it slid beneath my collar. In this posture of humility, closer to the earth, I picked up the scent. I had heard a thin snort ahead in the fog several minutes before and slowed my pace, tweaked my senses. The musk raised my head slowly to scan the brush, watch for the slightest movement. She stomped the ground with a front hoof. My eye instantly zeroed in, but she was not solely fixed on me. Her ears and eyes trained instead slightly to my east. There, Ma’iingan (wolf) with his alpha companion. In this interspecies standoff, this triangulation of consciousness, our awareness focused, solely encompassed onto this one moment, each of us puzzled at the intentions of the other—intrigued, alert, weighing responses. Each of us in a catatonic-like state, creating a memory field that would be accessible for the rest of our existence. Initial mistrust dissolved into the fog as thousands of generations of ancestors stood looking through our eyes into the eyes of one another. My tension and pulse slowed, as did the same in wolf and deer. A slow blink, tilt of head, a wag of tail, and lowering of standing shoulder hair spoke between us that we shared the graces of life. From my experience there is no higher state, no greater joy than a momentary glimpse of our connectedness, our unity with creation and the Great Mystery of Creator. This oneness, best described in terms of love, binds and fuses all beings and things in the phenomena of existence. Heavy fog again drifted between us veiling our union. Through it I caught a last glimpse of my relations withdrawing into the mist. The corners of my mouth and eyes turned upward as several more drops found their way down the back of my neck. I continued my journey. www.theteacherwithin.com
