Looking for Souls…
Before the place where I sit hundreds pass me by, unique, beautiful beings of mystery and amazement. I look out through curved windows seeking a glimpse of each soul as if I were God. Now and then an unknown force draws the eyes of one to gaze into mine and a tiny fragment of understanding is exchanged. A revelation that together we breathe the one breath of creation. . . . . . I have taken a moment in this shopping mall to re-center, to regain a semblance of mindfulness amidst the folly of consumerism. . . . . . “Looking for souls,” I call it. It is the quickest way I know to find mine, to bring my scattered being back to center, to hush the dissonance of my song. By this deliberate invisible reaching out for the beauty and essence of another, harmony is restored, as love effortlessly rises in my heart like a warm current in a restless sea. . . . . . Yes, harmony and love, part of our very nature, shy and polite, waiting to be invited into daily life. There is nothing peculiar or weird, no hocus pocus required to walk in these most supreme attributes of life. Harmony and love arrived with you in the same package at birth. Through our journey scars and wounds unhealed, misunderstood pain, deception and distraction may shout them into a back corner of our soul and we may wonder if they were only an illusion. But, fact of the matter is, it is through the very ebb and flow of the tides of life, the privilege, if you will, of being hurt, feeling anguish, suffering and our own foolish self-centeredness, that we learn to cherish the mindful state of harmony and love. . . . . . I have spent only a few minutes on this bench in the mall. The clamor of all this commotion and busyness is once again set in its place as I have made contact with the core of who I am. . . . . . . I invite you to give it a try. Sit down, step back, imagine you are the Parent of Creation beholding your children. Judge not. See the beauty and mystery that is every being before you. Love will effortlessly rise and you will find the song of your soul in harmony.
