Not only do we get great insight to the writing of the historical fiction, Nisei, which depicts the multifaceted issues surrounding Japanese/American internments and how they fought for all our freedoms during WWII, but also the discrimination of bi-racial relationships and the stigmata of being a child of growing up post war. Weene gives us intermittent treats, one being a sneak peek into Allegiance – A New Broadway Musical – Allegiance Allegiance is a musical with music and lyrics by Jay Kuo and a book by Marc Acito, Kuo, and Lorenzo Thione. The story, set during the Japanese American internment of World War II (with a framing story set in the present day), was inspired by the personal experiences of George Takei (best known as Sulu on Star Trek), who stars in the musical.
Much of what happens in Nisei and in the musical is factual; events we are not taught in school we should all be aware of and never let happen again. White did comprehensive research into every nuance of the story, even right down to the slang the Hawaiian/Japanese use. This is a must read.
