Katherine Yu, author of Drawing Sylvia: An Autistic Child Speaks, has signed with Kal-Ba Publishing!
Drawing Sylvia: An Autistic Child Speaks is a nonfiction about a young girl named Sylvia who was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age three and is considered “a special needs child.”
Katherine Yu takes us from labor to age nine, allowing us a glimpse into her world. From the moment of Sylvia’s birth, Katherine knew something was not quite right. Her attempts to doing what she had done with her first two children were matched with anxiety and fear as Sylvia never met the milestones expected at each developmental stage.
After diagnosis when Sylvia was three, she had to find a way to connect—nothing was working. The day she set paper and colored pencils in front of her was the “light bulb” moment. Sylvia embraced the colors and expressed her feelings, opinions and perspectives in a unique artistic fashion. It was her outlet to the world.
Author, screenplay writer, editor, TV/film producer and mother to three beautiful daughters, Katherine Yu has much to be proud of. When her youngest, Sylvia, was born with autism, she went through the usual roller coaster of emotions— fear, worry, loss, confusion, denial and anger—yet Katherine took this challenge by the horns and has refused to back down. Art was the key to unlocking the world around Sylvia. She is ten now.
This is her story…
