Fruma Ya’el
The most dramatic operation she [Fruma Ya’el] had done in twenty years was to extract a well-deserved bullet from Pinkas Rabinovich’s backside after a tavern brawl. Never did she imagine she would be called upon to perform such grisly surgery as she had on a poor orphan. She wiped the amputation blade with her rag and laid it in the mahogany case between a pair of scissors and a scalpel. What else could she have done? Sometimes life left one no choices.
Although Havah’s introduction to Fruma Ya’el is a painful one, she will become one of the most important people in the girl’s life.
Fruma Ya’el Levine, the cantor’s wife, is a one of Svechka’s most beloved citizens for she is the village midwife. She is proud of the fact that she’s seen most of the babies’ faces before their own mothers. Her great love of children has earned her the title of Auntie Fruma.
In her youth she had the opportunity to immigrate to America to study medicine, but tragic circumstances barred the way. Trapped in an arranged and empty marriage, she pours her love into her only living child, Gittel.
Fruma Ya’el sees in Havah the passionately intelligent girl she used to be. Little by little an ironclad bond forms between them.

Havah saw him as if in a dream remembered long ago. His hair and beard, inky shadows, framed a face as pale as dawn. Like silver-gray clouds, his prolific eyes spoke with silent words.
Arel. A strong name. Lion of God.

Arel Gitterman is the youngest of Yussel’s five children and his only son. Arel was five-years-old when brain fever killed his mother and took his father’s sight. A gifted child, he became Yussel’s eyes for reading.
He’s always been an obedient son, groomed to follow in his father’s footsteps as the next rabbi. At the age of thirteen he was betrothed to Gittel Levine, the cantor’s* daughter.
Arel never questioned his role in life—until the day of Havah’s dramatic arrival in Svechka. For both he and Havah it was love at first sight.
Much to her chagrin, he’s a man of his word and he refuses to break his covenant with Gittel, Havah’s adopted sister.

Words from Pep
A Momentary Lifting of Fog
Walking on a fog filled morning, I stooped low to keep from disturbing branches laden heavy with drizzle. Not low enough. A cold shower found its way down the back of my neck, each drop laughing as it slid beneath my collar. In this posture of humility, closer to the earth, I picked up the scent. I had heard a thin snort ahead in the fog several minutes before and slowed my pace, tweaked my senses. The musk raised my head slowly to scan the brush, watch for the slightest movement. She stomped the ground with a front hoof. My eye instantly zeroed in, but she was not solely fixed on me. Her ears and eyes trained instead slightly to my east. There, Ma’iingan (wolf) with his alpha companion. In this interspecies standoff, this triangulation of consciousness, our awareness focused, solely encompassed onto this one moment, each of us puzzled at the intentions of the other—intrigued, alert, weighing responses. Each of us in a catatonic-like state, creating a memory field that would be accessible for the rest of our existence. Initial mistrust dissolved into the fog as thousands of generations of ancestors stood looking through our eyes into the eyes of one another. My tension and pulse slowed, as did the same in wolf and deer. A slow blink, tilt of head, a wag of tail, and lowering of standing shoulder hair spoke between us that we shared the graces of life. From my experience there is no higher state, no greater joy than a momentary glimpse of our connectedness, our unity with creation and the Great Mystery of Creator. This oneness, best described in terms of love, binds and fuses all beings and things in the phenomena of existence. Heavy fog again drifted between us veiling our union. Through it I caught a last glimpse of my relations withdrawing into the mist. The corners of my mouth and eyes turned upward as several more drops found their way down the back of my neck. I continued my journey. www.theteacherwithin.com
