Trail of Deceit, a story of cold deception.

Four college students set out to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail. The trek turns to terror when a stranger brutally attacks the group. Having wandered off the main AT, a simple adventure is now a test of survival – from the elements as well as two and four-legged predators.

Nothing is as it seems and all is worse than could ever be imagined.

John House, MD, creates his novels from his vast and varied experiences in life. He served four years in the US Army, including a tour in Vietnam with the First Cavalry Division, and since has been actively involved in family, prison, sports and urgent care medicine. His knowledge of the Appalachian Trail comes from spending weekends hiking in the Appalachian Mountains with ‘Tall Guy’, a companion well versed in nature.

1256

Prior to becoming a novelist, House published poetry and won prizes for short fiction. His first two novels So Shall You Reap and Choices were written with locations based in Northern and Coastal Georgia. He is well-versed in all social media and is prepared to market and promote his works. www.johnhouseauthor.wordpress.com

Katherine

Drawing Sylvia: An Autistic Child Speaks is a nonfiction about a young girl named Sylvia who was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age three and is considered “a special needs child.”

Katherine Yu takes us from labor to age nine, allowing us a glimpse into her world. From the moment of Sylvia’s birth, Katherine knew something was not quite right. Her attempts to doing what she had done with her first two children were matched with anxiety and fear as Sylvia never met the milestones expected at each developmental stage.

After diagnosis when Sylvia was three, she had to find a way to connect—nothing was working. The day she set paper and colored pencils in front of her was the “light bulb” moment. Sylvia embraced the colors and expressed her feelings, opinions and perspectives in a unique artistic fashion. It was her outlet to the world.

Author, screenplay writer, editor, TV/film producer and mother to three beautiful daughters, Katherine Yu has much to be proud of. When her youngest, Sylvia, was born with autism, she went through the usual roller coaster of emotions— fear, worry, loss, confusion, denial and anger—yet Katherine took this challenge by the horns and has refused to back down. Art was the key to unlocking the world around Sylvia. She is ten now.

This is her story…

     OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Set in the 1930’s amidst the effects of Prohibition and the Depression, there is a conspiracy to assassinate President Roosevelt. Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation is in full-swing, and his key agent, Harry Bierce, has been tasked, with and without “knowledge,” to find the hit man. During his ceaseless delving, he solves several other cases which, unbeknownst to him, are tumbling dominos leading him to home plate.

Refreshing compared to today’s modern action/thrillers, it takes you back to a time when men and women really dressed well and where intuition, sleuthing and skills were needed to track down and apprehend bad guys. No cell phones, GPS, computers or even police radios. Martin keeps you thinking and craving until the last word. You finish saying to yourself, There has to be a sequel!

Jack Martin is the proud author of The Alphonso Clay Mystery Series set 1863-1869: John Brown’s Body, Battle Cry of Freedom, Marching Through Georgia, The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Hail Columbia, published by Fireship Press. Wally Avett

Authentically drawn from the sparse written accounts and oral history of the Southern Smokies where Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina meet, these stories hold your undivided attention from the first sentence to the last word.

Dyer portrait

Coosa Flyer is based on the true story of a backwoods genius everyone called the Professor who lived in the isolation of the Southern Appalachians. He built and flew a homemade aircraft in Union County, just south of Blairsville, Georgia, twenty years before the Wright Brothers. Backwoods Georgia Genius Built, Flew Mystery Aircraft

The story starts out with a pair of wandering Cherokees who journey down into the North Georgia Mountains from their home in nearby Western North Carolina.  They find a rich vein of gold and leave a puzzling map.

What the two ill-fated Native Americans started was a series of events culminating in family preservation through murder, true romance, a young man’s extraordinary intelligence producing the first aircraft and, in the end—almost a hundred years later—their gold will surface again.

Tobe Kirkwood

Rebel Bushwacker is based on true local incidents during the War Between the States. It takes place in the rugged Southern Appalachians where a classic “civil war” raged between Rebel partisans and Union loyalists.

Hattie June Rose finds herself in desperate times as she loses her innocence and her baby along the way, and is forced at a tender age to bury both her father and her brother. She trades sex and her native intelligence to the most notorious bushwhacker of them all, the “red-headed butcher,” Big Tobe Kirkwood, for his help in tracking down the Yankees who killed her father. Together, with his gang of Rebel Bushwackers, they wreak havoc on Yankees and their supporters…until the day she decides to stop Tobe for good.

Wally Avett is a semi-retired realtor in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.  He lives in the same little town, sometimes compared to Mayberry, where he was editor and chief writer all though the 70’s for the weekly newspaper. His first two novels Caney Fork (2013) and Last Bigfoot in Dixie (2014) are published by BelleBooks.

I believe God wants you to know that life was meant to be FUN! It’s hard to believe sometimes, but it’s true. It’s all about point of view.

I believe God wants you to know that life was meant to be FUN! It’s hard to believe sometimes, but it’s true. It’s all about point of view.

Even our most difficult moments bring us gifts. And so life may call upon us to be a bit “philosophical” now and then; to embrace the “low’s” with the “high’s.”

The trick, of course, is gratitude. Therein will you find both your peace and your joy.

“Give thanks in all things.” Paul – The Bible, New Testament – 1 Thessalonians 5:18

There is a lesson in each second of each day. Embrace it all and know we are all One.

Who Was Mary Boland?

Who Was Mary Boland?

I’ve told you that Mary Boland, my heroine in Shanty Gold, came to me in childhood dreams.

And she did—flaming hair streaming behind her as she rode bareback along the dazzling Irish Sea coast.

In fact, Mary Boland was the name of my great-grandmother. I yearned to know more about her, but my quests both in Ireland and America failed to produce a picture. It was as though she had faded from the earth without leaving an image.

So, I made her up out of the damp, salty air of Ireland. She’s a true daughter of that beleaguered land. But she was beautiful. And smart. And strong. And fast.

I hope my great-grandmother is pleased with what I’ve turned her into. Bet I’m close to what she was really like. Otherwise, why did she visit me so often as a child and tell me to write a book about her?

Follow your dreams…

Our speaker will be Douglas McCullough, co-author of a book published last September, Sea of Greed:  The Investigation and Prosecution of Manual Antonia Noriega.  Taking a quote off the Amazon website, here is the story in a nutshell!

“When the Coast Guard halted a Gulf Coast Shrimp trawler near Cape Lookout, North Carolina on the fourth of July weekend in 1982, the routine stop set into motion a chain of events that ended with the U.S. invasion of Panama, the overthrow of dictator, Manual Noriega, and the biggest drug bust in America’s history.

Now, more than thirty years later, the full story is told in a gripping, true life account by the man who brought the drug lord to justice.  J. Douglas McCullough, the U.S. attorney who unraveled the Cayman Island Cartel, reveals never before known facts of the case that began on the docks in the historic fishing village of Beaufort, North Carolina, when authorities found a shrimp boat full of marijuana.”

Most of us are aware of this period in history, but not aware of the remarkable undercover investigation that led up to the invasion and war.  This story uses sources such as the original FBI files, witness testimonies, U.S. Senate hearings and recollections of the government enforcement officials involved to include informants.  Even more amazing is that this is a true story!
