Sea of Greed

When the Coast Guard hailed a Gulf Coast shrimp trawler near Cape Lookout, North Carolina on fourth of July weekend 1982, the routine stop set in motion a chain of events that ended with the U.S. invasion of Panama, overthrow of dictator Manuel Noriega, and the biggest drug bust in America’s history.

Now, more than thirty-two years later, the full story is told in a gripping true-life account by the man who brought the drug lord to justice. J. Douglas McCullough, the U.S. attorney who unraveled the Cayman Island cartel, reveals never-before-known facts of the case that began on the docks of the historic fishing village of Beaufort, North Carolina when authorities found a shrimp boat full of marijuana.

Sea of Greed is based on the true story behind the arrest of Manuel Noriega and the invasion of Panama pursuant to Operation Just Cause. Published by Deer Hawk Publications www.deerhawkpublications.com  Represented by Loiacono Literary Agency www.loiaconoliteraryagency.com

Two fantastic review for By Accident of Birth by Thomas E. Simmons

BAB cover

BY ACCIDENT OF BIRTH

A Novel by Thomas E. Simmons

TouchPoint Press

BY ACCIDENT OF BIRTH, a novel, is an epic that traces the tumultuous life of Bethany Quinn. All her life a beauty in the eyes of others, Bethany Quinn considers herself a “freak” because of the circumstances of her birth and “fortune’s whore” because of the war-shadowed path she is compelled to follow.  Conceived through violence, she continues life along an often bloody path that carries her from childhood into womanhood, from rural postwar Reconstruction Mississippi to the Caribbean, from war-scarred Paris to civil war in Cuba. There are two loves in her life, one lost to the Orient, the other, a wounded prisoner of the Spanish.  At one point she sinks to the edge of madness from the part she plays in an unintended disaster. With help, she finds the will and strength to recover only to be swept up in yet another war. All aspects of the work are controlled in a flowing and creative style that plays within the confines of historical events and geographical settings, a sweeping tale full of drama, passion and adventure spanning the less traveled period from the end of the Civil War to the beginning of World War I (1863-1915). By Accident of Birth suffuses well- researched, factual incidents with fiction in a seamless manner that gives the reader historic realism during a memorable and exciting journey. By Accident of Birth is the sixth book by Simmons.

From page one, I was drawn into the life of BB Quinn. Immediately, there was the vision of a montage of Scout, Scarlet O’Hara and Elizabeth Swann; a spunky, gorgeous, raven-haired, green-eyed Tom-boy who never had ‘can’t’ in her vocabulary. Raised by Negro nannies and men of stature (a doctor and a gun-runner), she learned her manners as well as how to handle guns and men; both of which she would never really trust. You could not help but cheer her on and keep turning pages. I craved more at the end, but I won’t have to wait long. The sequel, The Last Quinn Standing, will be out soon. This is a book I will purchase and give as gifts for years to come. Bravo!

Character Study – Arel – From Silt and Ashes by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Character Study – Arel – From Silt and Ashes by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Framed Arel

The neighbor’s mouth puckered between her weathered cheeks. She glared at Arel and thrust a spear like finger in his direction. “I’m telling you, Officer, I hear this commotion almost every night. That beast is beating up on this poor helpless gal. It’s a crying shame, her being in a family way and crippled besides. Why he oughta be horsewhipped! Just look at them scars, any dang fool can tell he’s a brawler.”

Arel’s gray eyes turned black. He tugged his nightcap trying to hide the scars that trailed from his forehead to his chin. His thin lips tightened over his clamped teeth.

Havah’s chest buzzed like an angry hornet. How dare this wicked woman make such accusations! Clenching her good hand into a fist, Havah tripped toward her, but Arel’s fingers tightened around her shoulder.

Taken from From Silt and Ashes by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

Raised to walk in his father’s footsteps as a rabbi in the Old Country, Arel Gitterman turned from his vocation when his first wife, Gittel, died in childbirth. He felt unworthy to teach Torah since he had been unfaithful in his heart and mind; for, in the midst of his arranged marriage to the sweet young woman, he still longed for Havah.

Like Havah, Arel sustained both physical and emotional injuries in the Kishinev pogrom. Scars from a nearly fatal beating obscure half of his face.

Adapting to his new life as an American, he works as a tailor in his brother-in-law’s shop, a job that fits him like a well-made suit.

The birth of a less than perfect child puts a strain on Arel and Havah’s marriage. After all they have been through together, he’s not sure he’s up to the challenge.

As the family faces another tragedy, Arel learns that God’s light shines brightest in times of darkness. www.rochellewordart.com
