Argus acquires John Flynn’s fifth novel in the Kate Dawson series, Merchants of Death!

When a BART subway car arrives at its destination, with twenty-four passengers all dead, Kate Dawson must find out what killed them and who is responsible for their deaths. Her investigation takes her from the treacherous back streets of Chinatown to a luxurious Chateau nestled in the Northern California hills, and from a lavish horse race track to a perilous underground lair. She is pitted against a young rival who covets her job, a twisted but wealthy brother and sister duo who deal in illegal arms and drugs, and a deadly group of U.S. Army deserters, known as Task Force Red. Romancing the Wind

The man flying the 3 kites is in his 80s, and he’s from Canada. He comes to the Washington State International Kite Festival every year. His skin is like leather as he normally flies with his shirt off. He is deaf, so when he flies we hold our hands up and wave them for applause. He flies 2 with his hands and the 3rd one is attached to his waist. Enjoy!

You must watch to the end to see the amazing landing of that last kite!  I would have those kites so tangled up, you could never get them separated again!  And of course, make sure the volume is turned up because the music is wonderful and totally reflects the soaring of the kites.  Beautiful

Ed Protzel’s Honor Among Outcasts has won a gold medal in the Literary Titan Book Awards!

Honor Among Outcasts is book two in the Dark Horse Trilogy. The first, The Lies That Bind, introduces us to Durk, a group of freedom-seeking slaves, Antoinette, and a cast of unsavory characters who are determined to destroy them all.

After their harrowing escape from Mississippi, abolitionist Durksen Hurst, his fiancée Antoinette DuVallier, and their friends — a group of undocumented slaves — land in guerrilla-infested Civil War Missouri, the most savage whirlwind of destruction, cruelty, and death in American history.

Trapped in a terrifying cycle of murder and revenge, scarred by Quantrill’s cold-blooded Lawrence massacre and the Union army’s ruthless Order Eleven, Durk and everyone he cares for soon find themselves entangled in a struggle for their very survival.

Honor Among Outcasts takes readers on a pulse-pounding journey of desperate men and women caught up in the merciless forces of hatred and fear that tear worlds apart, and the healing power of friendship to bring them together.

Ed Protzel has written five original screenplays for feature film and worked developing film scripts/projects for 20th Century Fox. He has a Master’s in English Literature/Creative Writing from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and a B.A. in English, with a minor in history, from the University of Hawaii.

The Lies That Bind is based on Protzel’s screenplay which was recognized by the Missouri Playwrights Association. It had brief Hollywood exposure; was called “a great script” by 20th Century Fox’s Murray Silverman, Paramount’s Sherry Lansing, and Chelsea Studios producer Stan Zuckerman.

The final novel of the trilogy, Something in Madness,  includes the same major characters as the original but takes place during Reconstruction.

Don’t Listen to the Liar

Growing up there was one sure way to get into A LOT of trouble and that was lying to my parents. Regardless of what had happened, it would only get worse if you were not truthful.   My brothers and I certainly tested our parents. Like the time my middle brother and I burnt his end of the year report card because he made a F in a subject. (I don’t even remember the subject was).  I was in the 8th grade and he was in the 6th. We burnt his report card in the field in front of our house. My poor Mom looked for my brother’s report card for weeks. Finally, she called the school and they told her he passed to the 7th grade and she let it go. (Thankfully) Years later we finally told her and she laughed (kinda.)  We got away with this one but it was rare. As many of you know, mamas always know.

On my way to work this morning, I heard this song about lying. It is actually Fear is a Liar. Here are some of the words to this song:

When he told you you’re not good enough
When he told you you’re not right
When he told you you’re not strong enough
To put up a good fight
When he told you you’re not worthy
When he told you you’re not loved
When he told you you’re not beautiful
That you’ll never be enough

Fear he is a liar
He will take your breath
Stop you in your steps
Fear he is a liar
He will rob your rest
Steal your happiness

         Zach Williams http://zachwilliamsmusic.com

I found strength and reassurance in the words of this song.  Fear keeps us from doing a lot of things that benefit us. Example:  We drive the speed limit for the “fear” of getting a ticket.  We respected our parents for “fear” of being in trouble.  However, fear can keep us from taking chances that are good for us and fear can rob us of happiness and self-worth.

As I was listening to these words, I thought of the times when I was told I was not good enough or strong enough. I thought of the times when I was bullied during middle school for being “short for my weight” and having this crazy curly (not popular in the early 80’s) hair.  While I always felt loved by my parents and my sweet brothers, friends were very few in numbers. Today, I am very fortunate that I have a supportive family and friends PLUS I have great work family.

Today & every day, I want you all to know that you are valuable, worthy, beautiful, needed, and strong. You make a difference and for you, I am thankful.  I hope that you will think about this song when you are having a bad day or do not feel like you are worthy or valuable.  Life can be hard and we can all feel beat down. However, difficult times are temporary and through persistence—you (we) can overcome.

I hope you all have a safe and happy Memorial Weekend.
