Lisa Reinhard’s two midgrade/YA novels, Unbreakable Will and Washed by a Beach, are to be published by Argus Publishing!

Unbreakable Will is set in the Great Depression. Its main character is Will Handler, a twelve-year-old who is riding the rails to escape an unbearable family in Pittsburgh. He quickly finds out that life on the road is not the stuff of boyhood dreams. It is a cold, lonely, and hungry existence. There is no place like home after living with hobos and working as a ‘hand’ in the circus. He ends up saving a man and his daughter in a train accident, which brings him to meet the President himself. This is Will’s coming-of-age experience during a desperate time in our nation’s history, and it’s just as relevant today since we are facing a similar economic crisis. It is a story of grit, of digging deep inside to find the strength to go on, and of not giving up.

Unbreakable Will has the potential to be a great Accelerated Reader book. Written to target the midgrade audience, it gives important historical facts, geographical locations, and key political figures of that time. Children going to their teachers asking if this really happened, and most of it did.

Based on the true story of her father’s life, it is a moving tribute. Although she wanted to see it published before he died, it did not happen. We would like nothing more than to memorialize him in print. Reinhard began working on this novel after discovering her father was dying of cancer. It is based on his true adventures of leaving Pittsburgh when he was twelve and heading for California. Interviewing her father before his death, she conducted extensive research into the Great Depression, read dozens of books, watched films of riding the rails, the construction of Hoover Dam, and what life was like during that time. She also listened to the music from that era, all of which shines through her words and makes you feel like you are right there.

Washed by a Beach is the story of how a teenage girl and her mother escape mental and physical abuse and go on to build a new life. It chronicles the struggles as well as the triumphs of starting over after leaving everything behind.

It begins as Lucy and her mother are riding on a bus headed for “who knows where,” just as long as it’s far away from Kansas, a place of immeasurable suffering. Each time the bus stops, Lucy’s mother gets off the bus, looks around, and says, “Nope, this isn’t it, Luce…” Finally, when they run out of land and find themselves on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, they sink into the sand, which seems luscious to them, and say, “Yea, this is it.”

Therein begins the rebuilding of two lives, cleansed by their new world—washed by the beach they each so love—as they start to reclaim who they truly are, what they are good at, and what they enjoy doing.

Lisa Hussey Reinhard is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and Kansas City, Missouri.  She graduated magna cum laude from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and earned a Master’s in education from Texas A & M /Commerce.  She has been an elementary, middle school, and college teacher for over thirty years.  www.lisareinhard.com

A Foreign Affair by Amanda Matti is popping up all over!

An acquaintance who’s read A Foreign Affair snapped this picture at a newsstand near downtown San Diego this morning:

“HI Mandy, I was waiting for bus 6 to take me downtown today and stepped into the Paras Newsstand. Look what I saw laying on the counter…”

If you have not gotten a copy of A Foreign Affair, you must! This is the true story of  Amanda and Fadi Matti, governmental bureaucracies, mismanagement, and mishandling of agencies, terrorism, torture, and, most importantly, how love does conquer all. The Man Called Brown Condor is the biography of John Charles Robinson, known in the media of the 1930s as The Brown Condor of Ethiopia. This is the true story of Robinson’s struggles to overcome the racial prejudice that all but closed the field of aviation to Blacks. His outstanding success in accomplishing his dream of flying, his influence toward the establishment of a school of aviation at Tuskegee Institute (there would have been no Tuskegee Airmen without him) and his courageous wartime service in Ethiopia during the Italian invasion in 1935 are brought to life.

It was during Robinson’s service to Ethiopia that he took to the air in opposition to the first Fascist invasion of what would become World War II. This remarkable American Hero may have been the first American to oppose Fascism in combat.

One reader’s assessment of the works of Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

As One Must, One Can (The Havah Gitterman Saga Book 3) (Kindle Edition)

as-one-must-one-can

This is the wonderful third book of a trilogy about persecution that begins in Czarist Russia and ends in Kansas City. I have read all three and they are the best-researched and well-written books I have had the pleasure of reading. Although this is not a book or genre I would choose, I could not put them down. As One Must, One Can keeps you guessing until the end as to the fate of characters and whether there is still justice or persecution of the beloved characters. If you enjoy reading, these books are an integral addition to your library. You WILL love, hate, laugh, and cry. Phenomenal author and one to continue following.

First and second in the series, and the companion book due out in 2017 by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields; all published by Argus Publishing. Represented by Loiacono Literary Agency. All art by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields.

As with all that comes from Rochelle Wisoff-Fields, this blog grabs you, draws you into Havah’s world, and begs you to read the books, if you have not already, again. Her words paint pictures in your mind, allow the scenes to play out so vividly you think yourself a voyeur eavesdropping and spying on private experiences. As her agent, I am honored and privileged to represent her. It is a gift to be able to read her works. Do so if you have not and cherish every syllable. Please Say Kaddish For Me, From Silt and Ashes, and As One Must, One Can. Please look for the companion coffee table book in 2017, A Stone for the Journey; all published by Argus Publishing.

A Five Star Reading Experience! By Rev. Bill McDonald Jr.

As One Must, One Can (The Havah Gitterman Saga Book 3) (Kindle Edition)

Author Rochelle Wisoff-Fields captures the heart of the reader right from the beginning. As One Must, One Can is like moving prose and history through a time capsule.

Kansas City, Missouri becomes the canvas from which the author paints. She weaves words and phrases with all the colors of the human emotional rainbow with gentle hands and a compassionate heart. I found myself enjoying the reading journey as much as the story itself.

“As One Must, One Can” is about never giving up hope and always finding that light at the end of the tunnel of life. This is about the importance of not going into the darkness when times go bad. This book is both inspirational as well as entertaining. Truly a Five Star Reading Experience!
