Remembering Lost Lives, Lost Souls and a Lost Nation

Remembering Lost Lives, Lost Souls and a Lost Nation

by Richard Thornton

It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance and more desolation. War is hell. Major General William Tecumseh Sherman Memorial Day – 2016 In the spring of 2010, it was my honor to spend two weeks camping […]

Fate and fortune are cut from the same cloth as are honor and integrity, but above all, there is loyalty…

A pact of honor and responsibility is taken on D-Day by William Dunavant and Alex Powe; both expectant fathers who know they may not survive the invasion. When Powe is captured, tortured and killed, Dunavant vows to keep his promise…

Fourteen years later, Dunavant visits Powe’s son, Nick, for the first time, telling the young man how his father died and of their lifetime agreement. Nick is a natural sniper and considers his ability a gift; one he is fated and honed to use.

Grace Dunavant is an intelligent, driven young woman cut of the same cloth as her father. Suspicious of her father’s role in past and current events, she confronts him after finding a letter from Simon Wiesenthal regarding the search for a Nazi war criminal, the very one who killed Powe—Werner Krueger.

Grace and Nick make a much more personal pact; one of dudgeons and daggers.

Dudgeons and Daggers is the combination of Carnes’ life experiences, history and one heck-of-an imagination. He worked as a roustabout on an offshore gas platform, was a Green Beret in the US Special Forces, and is a teacher of twenty-two years, a public relations manager, a basketball coach, a devoted husband and the father of two rowdy boys— all of which makes this novel ever so real.

His first novel, Rasputin’s Legacy (Black Rose Writing, 2010), garnered notable endorsements and rave reviews. www.troymatthewcarnes.com

Professor Kendall Dunkelberg, Mississippi University for Women professor and director of the Creative Writing low-residency MFA, has invited Johnnie Bernhard to give a presentation on the submission process in traditional publishing on June 1, 2016 at the MUW campus in Jackson, MS. I will also offer pitch sessions for the students. He has graciously invited her back once A Good Girl is published (Texas Review Press, 2017).

Professor Dunkelberg’s most recent work, Barrier Island Suite, was published by Texas Review Press. The collection of poetry is inspired by Ocean Springs’ artist, Walter Anderson.  The book cover for A Good Girl is designed by Ocean Springs’ artist, Grady Byrd. The Mississippi Gulf Coast has been my home since Hurricane Katrina and also serves as part of the setting for the novel. Serendipity!

Amazing review for Bank Notes: The True Story of the Boonie Hat Bandit by Caroline Giammanco

Bank Notes 041
Earlier tonight, I finished reading Bank Notes by Caroline Giammanco. What an engaging work this was. It’s more than the story of an apprehended bank robber, told mostly in his own words–it’s a scathing, fact-cited indictment of the criminal justice system of the State of Missouri. It’s a story of how we must not take the freedoms afforded by our Constitution for granted, but above that, way above that, it’s a story of how true love, the support of family, and belief in oneself is absolutely the most important thing in the face of insurmountable adversity. It’s thoroughly researched from start to finish, and although maybe a bit self-serving, Caroline does a phenomenal job in standing up and painting a complete picture, from beginning to end, that allows us to think about our own way, our own personal freedoms, and that none of these should ever be taken for granted. It’s a total package, a great read that’s never preachy and respects the intelligence of the reader. I would strongly recommend reading this. The language is simple for all of the technical complexities involving the legalities of Keith’s defense. This, my friends, is courage defined.
