Texarkana Literacy/Charity Annual Event

We started this unique event in 2010, focusing on writers in and around our
area, but since has grown into something far greater.  We combine the importance
of literacy and giving into one.  Four years ago, we added St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital into our event as our Charity of choice to donate to, but later included Arkansas Children’s Hospital as well.  We bring in authors from all around to share their books, speak and do autographings at the event.  These wonderful authors have become like family to this event and together we all work hard to raise money for these two remarkable hospitals that do nothing but save children’s lives.  Please join our Gathering family and be a part of our event.

2017 GOA Dates:  Friday Oct. 27th, and Sat. Oct. 28th –
Texarkana Arkansas Convention Center

The Charity dinner will be Oct. 27th and PLEASE  RSVP.
The day of the event is Oct. 28th from 10 am – 3 pm…bring a friend and help us make a difference.

If you have questions about the event, email us at gatheringofauthors@yahoo.com   http://gatheringofauthors.com/index.html

**Should you want to make a donation toward the event, click on the  link below**  We will soon have our 501C3 status where all donations will be tax deductible.   Receipt for donations will be available then.

The second book in the Choestoe series by JR Collins, Living Where the Rabbits Dance, has been released!

Settlers living in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of 1827 were beginning to see changes they weren’t comfortable with. Men of questionable motives had been seen wandering the trails in search of gold; paying no mind to the needs of the local folks they were invading. Jeb Collins, a twelve-year-old settler boy of Irish decent, was growing to manhood in these mountains. He and his best friend and Blood Brother, Wolf, a full-blood Cherokee boy of the same age, cared deeply about what was happening.

With the coming of U.S. Soldiers to the mountains, death will follow. The boys soon realize their mountain peace is ending and a time of war is approaching; a war they must prepare for; a war they sense will not end well for the Cherokee. This fear makes them decide to fight the madness that is threatening their way of life before it grows. The dangers of their decision will force the boys to risk their lives doing what they feel is right. If death was the will of the Great Creator, then all was just fine with them. They were ready to do what had to be done. After all, it is their home that will be lost if the evil is allowed to spread.

The first book in the Choestoe stories, The Boy Who Danced with Rabbits, is a very spiritual book, both Christian and Native American, that seeps into your soul, igniting a desire to know these people and to mimic their ways through the deep love, devotion, loyalty, and pride they show one another.

J.R. Collins was raised in the valley he so passionately writes about. An ancestor of the first pilgrims to the area, he proudly claims heritage and roots through the people of the Appalachian Mountains that settled in the Choestoe Valley sometime in the latter part of the 1700s. He grew up hunting and running the ridges of Choestoe.

Collins is the Director of Advertising for The North Georgia News, having worked as the editor for sports stories and special events. He is a graduate of Young Harris College. James Garrison’s excellent review by The US Review of Books!

QL 4
by James Garrison
TouchPoint Press
“‘The worst times to get killed are right after you get here and right before you leave.’ He rolled his eyes toward heaven. ‘And all the days in between.'”

Private First Class Justin Bell is drafted into the Vietnam War while pursuing his graduate degree and is assigned to Military Police patrol where he observes a corruption far beyond the combat he was anticipating. Distraught by the crime and injustice he repeatedly witnesses, he quickly becomes disillusioned by the military and the war effort. Ill at ease in his surroundings and assignments, he doesn’t know whom to trust and begins to question everyone’s motives as any form of stability he previously sensed crumbles. He uncovers a trail of deception that links to a highly profitable black market, and crossing paths with those involved can prove deadly. As the disturbances mount, his morality can no longer allow him to remain silent. Bell struggles to find a resolution to his discontent as he evaluates his own responsibility in the occurring exploits.

The magnitude of how one choice impacts all proceeding outcomes is the essential premise of this wartime novel. Each character in the story faces a distinctive situation in which the decision-making process is amplified by the ability to survive under chaotic and life-threatening circumstances. The author depicts the Vietnam landscape and cultural environment in expert detail, creating an ominous backdrop that serves as an overture to the arduous missions of the American servicemen and personnel. QL 4, the highway that runs from Saigon into the Mekong Delta, plays an integral role in the novel, exposing a harsh imbalance between the violence and the undeveloped terrain. Readers of historical fiction, military, and crime novels will be intrigued by the author’s organized plot that continually forms heightened suspense as the characters reveal their intent, configuring an unpredictable climax and a haunting conclusion to the Vietnam experience.
